Tusheti is Georgia’s most remote region, surrounded by the Chechen-Daghestani border to the north and east, the isolated Pshavi and Khevsureti to the west, and the towering 3000-meter Caucasus ridge to the south. Its only connection to the rest of the country is the rugged, unpaved road over the 2850-meter Abano Pass, keeping mass tourism at bay despite growing visitor numbers.
Tusheti is divided into three main valleys, each home to distinct Tush subgroups. Pirikiti Tushs live along the Pirikiti Alazani River near the Russian border, in villages like Dartlo, Parsma, and Girevi. Gometsari Tushs inhabit the Tushetis Alazani valley, with key villages including Jvarboseli and Dochu. At the rivers' confluence, Chaghma Tushs reside in Omalo—the region’s center—along with villages like Shenako and Diklo. A separate, now-abandoned Tsovata valley was once home to the Tsova Tushs (Batsbi), a distinct group with its own language.
Life in Tusheti revolves around the opening and closing of the mountain road. In late May, as the snow clears, shepherds lead their flocks to summer pastures, followed by tourists eager to explore the region’s wild beauty. By late September, the shepherds return to the lowlands, the road becomes impassable, and Tusheti settles into its long winter, with only a few residents and border guards remaining.
