If you want to relax surrounded by beautiful nature, do plenty of horseback riding and discover the diversity of the two, Southern and northern parts of Kakheti region, witness one of nature’s greatest displays on horseback, then this is the tour for you. Every day, you will be exploring a bit more of the breathtaking surroundings on horseback and soon you cannot imagine a single day without the great companionship of the horses. When you are not on horseback, there are numerous activities and attractions close by: bird watching, wine tasting, to name only a few of them.

You will be riding with a free-running herd of horses from the semi-desert area to the summer pastures in the mountains of Tusheti. Endless, unspoiled nature awaits you and your horse, with huge glaciers shimmering at the horizon, far from all tourist crowds. The spirited but reliable Tushetian horses, the committed staff and the diverse riding trails will leave you deeply satisfied. In addition to your days on horseback, you and your fellow riders will go on an exclusive sightseeing tour to some of the most famous attractions in Kakheti region. This trip is a high standard riding adventure you will never forget.

Important note: The ride is not an ordinary tour, we’ll be participating in a centuries-old working activity, so we’ll have to follow a real process that can hardly be adjusted to our needs and preferences. So there might be some unexpected changes, sometimes even night riding (not dangerous), sometimes one day riding distance reduced and in exchange the next day exceed 10h riding. So it’s very important that guests are very fit riders and acceptable & open for these changes.

1
Tbilisi - Vashlvoani Horse farm

We'll pick you up from your hotel in Tbilisi and head to Dedoplistskaro. After checking in at the Vashlovani Protected Areas Visitors’ Centre, we’ll grab lunch and stop by the local bazaar. Then we’ll make our way to Vashlovani National Park.

Once we arrive, we’ll have a 2-hour ride to get used to the gear and meet the horses.

We’ll spend the night camping in tents.

2
Vashlovani - Dedoplistskaro

Our first riding day kicks off with gathering the herd—stallions, mares, foals, and young horses—to take them to the summer pastures. You can feel the excitement of the free-running horses as we head towards the highlands.

We’ll ride through the grain fields of the Shiraki plain, known as Georgia’s “barn.” The ground is soft, making it perfect for galloping along the paths between the wheat fields, with amazing views of the Greater Caucasus mountains in the distance. We’ll mostly stick to a canter to keep the herd together and move them out of the area quickly.

We’ll camp overnight in tents near Dedoplistskaro.

  • Total distance – 60km (6hrs)
  • Difficulty – difficult (mostly trot and canter through the grain fields)
3
Dedoplistskaro - Tsnori campsite

We pack up and ride past the villages of Kakheti, Georgia’s main wine region. Along the way, you’ll get to enjoy some classic Kakhetian hospitality and even try homemade wine.

We’ll camp out again, this time near the villages of Tsnori and Sakobo. The campsite is a small meadow close to the villages and nearby roads, so you might hear a bit of noise.

  • Total distance – 60km (7 hrs)
  • Difficulty – difficult (mostly trot and canter)
4
Sakobo camsite - Kondoli farm

After breakfast, we’ll set off riding along the longest irrigation canal, with a highway or canal on one side and vineyards, fruit, and veggie gardens on the other. It’s a long day, and the scenery doesn’t change much—just locals working in the fields and driving their old, beat-up cars.

At the end of the canal, we’ll reach our campsite, which is at a cow farm run by some super kind and special hosts.

  • Total distance – 55km (7 hrs)
  • Difficulty – difficult (mostly trot and canter)
5
Kondoli farm - Village Alvani

On our last day in the lowlands, we’ll ride through more vineyards and charming lowland villages. The highlight of the day is a visit to the Alaverdi Monastery, an amazing 11th-century landmark, near our final stop in Alvani.

We’ll spend the night at a cozy local guesthouse, and in the evening, enjoy dinner and wine tasting at a small family winery.

Overnight at the guesthouse with shared bathrooms

  • Total distance – 45km (7 hrs)
  • Difficulty – difficult (mostly trot and canter)
6
Village Alvani - Abano campsite

We leave the guesthouse and head for the mountains, riding along the Stori River.

We’ll camp out in tents above the tree line for the night. Depending on the weather, the campsite will be either before or after Abano pass (2860m).

  • Total distance – 43km (7 hrs)
  • Difficulty – difficult (mostly trot and canter)
7
Abano Campsite - Omalo

We ride up to the highest drivable pass in Europe, the Abano Pass. As we climb, the landscape gets rougher, and we’ll stop for lunch along the way. The strong riding horses will lead us safely through the old highland paths, and we’ll notice the vegetation turning lush and green from the rich soil and water.

After crossing the 2930m high pass, we begin our descent into Tusheti—a truly magical and peaceful place we’ll never forget. It’s amazing to see the horses enjoying their freedom as we leave them on the Omalo Plateau, then continue on to our guesthouse with our riding horses.

  • Total distance – 32km (6 hrs)
  • Difficulty – medium (while descending from the pass we’ll have to dismount and lead our horses)

9
Omalo - Tbilisi

We’ll head back to the lowlands the same way we came, but this time by car. It’s about a 6-hour drive to Tbilisi.

Please note: If the road isn’t passable, we’ll hop back on the horses and ride to the nearest spot where the car can pick us up.
