Vashlovani Protected Areas lie in the southeastern corner of Georgia, within the Dedoplistskaro municipality. Often referred to as the "Georgian savanna," this region is known for its semi-desert landscapes and unique vegetation.

Characterized by hills, canyons, and desert-like expanses, this area was once the bottom of an ancient sea. Evidence of this can still be seen today, with numerous fossilized seashells discovered in the region, believed to be over two million years old.

The park is also a biodiversity hotspot, home to over 700 rare plant species and more than 46 different types of mammals. It is a haven for birds of prey, serving as a vital nesting ground for these majestic raptors.

Following the Iori River upstream, you'll encounter the mesmerizing Takhtitepa mud volcanoes. These bubbling craters continuously spew a mixture of natural gas, mud, and occasional drops of oil, creating a surreal and captivating natural spectacle.

As the journey continues, the landscape transitions to the Iori Plateau, leading to the Sabereebi cave monastery. These ancient cells, adorned with 9th-10th century frescoes, stand as one of Georgia's oldest and most significant spiritual landmarks, offering a profound connection to the country's rich history.

This extraordinary horseback tour combines stunning landscapes, ancient history, and natural wonders, making it an unforgettable adventure.

To the south, the Iori River comes into view, winding its way alongside the Chachuna Strict Nature Reserve. This protected area is famous for its rare arid forests and diverse biodiversity, offering a striking display of the region's natural beauty. Additionally, the river serves as the border between Georgia and Azerbaijan, and from time to time, we will encounter Georgian border guards while also observing Azerbaijani settlements across the riverbanks.

As the sun dips lower, we arrive at Georgia's second-largest water reservoir—a massive Soviet-era project that, surprisingly, was never used for hydropower.

On the reservoir’s left bank, a handful of charming cottages blend harmoniously with the landscape. These cozy retreats will be our home for the next two nights, offering peace and serenity amid nature's raw beauty.

Our journey continues on another day filled with historical and cultural depth, taking us through a landscape of great religious significance to Georgia. As we navigate through the semi-desert terrain, we come across the ruins of ancient cave monasteries, their walls still adorned with stunning 9th-10th century frescoes. These remarkable remnants offer a window into the spiritual history of the region, revealing its deep religious roots.

As the day comes to a close, we arrive at the unique village of Udabno, named after its arid, desert-like surroundings. This village, interestingly, was founded by the Soviets, who resettled mountain communities from Svaneti, in the north-western part of Georgia, forcing them to relocate to this starkly different environment.

For our overnight stay, we’ll enjoy the warmth of a local homestay, where we’ll have the chance to indulge in traditional Svanean dishes.
